Shift From Performance Appraisal to Performance Management

Performance Appraisal is the system to appraise the past performance of the employee and based of the performance decision regarding the employee's promotion and regarding other benefits can be made. Usually a supervisor or the immediate boss is responsible for it to write the appraisal of the employees. It is quite debatable that the appraisal is good or bad, some people think that the appraisal is quite justified while other think that it is not a fair system as the biased can be an element which can ruined the real benefit for it. In this article I am not going to argue that performance appraisal is good or bad but the topic is that a shift from the performance appraisal to performance management is currently arising.

HR personnel are now moving towards the performance management having several benefits which cant be get by using the traditional appraisal system. The shift from appraisal to management are based on three dimensions these are
  1. Organization are focusing on the long term future prospective goals, thats why HR department has also shifted from short term to long term prospective.
  2. According to the quality Gurus, the evaluation should be continuous process, in case of appraisal, the evaluation is a biannual or annual process but in management its a continuous process of evaluation.
  3. The groups evaluation should be done in contrast to the individual this would not only reduce the blame game but also increase the motivation of individuals to working in a teams.
These three dimensions tend to bring a shift from the performance appraisal to the performance management which will surely give rise to the better results for the organization.
