12 Angy Men, Lesson Learnt

12 Angry Men (1957) is the gripping, penetrating, and engrossing examination of a diverse group of twelve jurors (all male, mostly middle-aged, white, and generally of middle-class status) who are uncomfortably brought together to deliberate after hearing the 'facts' in a seemingly open-and-shut murder trial case. They retire to a jury room to do their civic duty and serve up a just verdict for the indigent minority defendant (with a criminal record) whose life is in the balance. The film is a powerful indictment, denouncement and expose of the trial by jury system. The frightened, teenaged defendant is on trial, as well as the jury and the American judicial system with its purported sense of infallibility, fairness and lack of bias.

Alternatively, the film could also be viewed as commentary on McCarthyism, Fascism, or Communism (threatening forces in the 50s). One of the film's posters described how the workings of the judicial process can be disastrous: "LIFE IS IN THEIR HANDS - DEATH IS ON THEIR MINDS! It EXPLODES Like 12 Sticks of Dynamite."

On the whole this movie is a really wonderful movie and gives the viewer a wide variety of lessons to learn. What I have learnt from this movie, I am going to pen it down.

1.       Decision should be based on collective wisdom

The decisions should be based on collective wisdom as in this case of movie if judge make a decision by himself so, he may get it wrong and an innocent life may come to an end for nothing. But making a jury was a good decision and the element of collective wisdom play an important role in order to go for the right decision.

2.      Decision can affect the others life drastically

As in this movie, most of the people were saying that boy is guilty and they don’t have any justification for that, they were just influence by their fellows. So this thing must be kept in consideration while making decision that other’s life is in your hand and you must take care of your authority.

In group other’s decision may make impact on your own choice

While working in group others decision can make an impact on you and the simple solution as it was used in this movie was that you must conduct some secret belting so the element of influence can be avoid.

4.      Baked your decision with wisdom and Logics

When you take some decision before that you must have enough logic and wisdom behind that as in this case he proves with the example that the boy is not guilty but others perceive it wrong.

5.      Negotiation is the only solution to handle the conflict effectively

When you struck in some decision making process and conflict start arising, it is much better that you sit there and negotiate with the opposing party and come up for some harmonizing stage.

6.      Always stay stick with the facts

On whatever stage you are, you must stay stick with the facts and figures by completely forgetting the human emotions and psychology. It may be possible that you perceive the things wrong.

7.      Always look at the root cause

Don’t look on the surface always go for the insight of the problem as the root cause can be different. Same is with the conflict remove the root cause rather than thrashing it from the surface.

8.      Emotions must put aside

As human have emotions and some time we can’t control our emotions but we must try to put our emotions aside and think logically while making any decision.

9.      Differences of opinion doesn’t mean you are wrong

It is not necessarily that all get agree on one point; disagreement may lead to the better judgment and help your decision with logic.

  1. I saw this movie a long time ago, I think they did another version in the 90s, I also saw the theater play, I really like it, and it remind us the amount of pressure that jury have, and that they are not God, they probably don't have all the answers and they can be wrong sometimes.
